KSS activities;
KSS invites members to join the 2009 committee:

Kannada Sangha of Sacramento (KSS) is completing five years of its formation with many successes. Congratulations to all of us on completing 5 years.

KSS was formed by few like minded people five years ago, with a simple goal “Preserve and promote Kannada Language and Culture. “

Well, you tell us. Is KSS on the right path?

While you are working on your feedback, please allow us to ruminate little bit how did we do. We are not even going to pretend that we are anywhere near to our goal. But still, there are several uniquely amazing and creative things KSS has done within the short span of four years with limited resources. Now think about the all those functions that KSS has done all these years. Now coming to the "Preserving the Kannada culture" part of KSS founding vision, the proof is that what you are seeing.

You have been coming to our functions in increasing numbers. It may be due to the hospitality and hard work of the KSS volunteers in each and every event, managing to start the functions on time despite the involvement of so many new artists each time, serving you the delicious food with a hospitable smile, introducing new and creative methods like relevant background slides, lighting, music, side captions in English, the props, we can go on and on...

Quality of the programs is going only upward direction. Each time the bar is raised. One program is better than other.

Above all these, it is just the simplicity and open hearted friendliness of KSS volunteers, what makes this work. Just the normal folks coming together with a pure, simple desire to show off the talent they have.

KSS objectives are simple. It's means are simple. It's working methods are simple. We are proud of what we did so far. We are sure you are proud that KSS evolved on the Sacramento soil, your home away from home or your adopted new home.

Please come support KSS by joining 2009 committee and be part of this organization. The registration starts soon and formation process completed by 1st or 2nd week of January. Stay tuned for a detailed email about this process.

KSS Charity of the year “Mathruchaya” anathashrama – soliciting donations:

KSS requests its members to contribute towards the charity of the year “Mathruchaya”.

“Mathruchaya” is a registered organization which takes care of children from economically and socially backward families. Ashram provides shelter, food, clothing, healthcare and education (all at free of cost) to children who have lost their parents. Presently it is a “HOME” for 30 orphaned girls. Mathruchaya is located in 'Shimoga' (or Shivamogga) city in Karnataka.

KSS requests all Kannadigas in greater Sacramento and surrounding areas to support this cause and help to achieve our goal of supporting financially as much we can. The goal is to collect minimum $1000 and no limit on maximum amount. This amount will be used by Mathruchaya to construct their own building instead of renting a place.

You can send your contributions to the following address payable to "Kannada Sangha of Sacramento" or "KSS". In all the KSS events you will see a donation box which is used for collecting funds. You can donate either by cash or personal check. Since KSS is 501(3) (c) non profit organization, this donation is tax deductible. KSS will provide a receipt for your donation.

Visit http://www.mathruchaya.com/index. htm for more info on the charity

Address for mailing your contribution: 9615 Harvest View Way, Sacramento CA 95827

Helping Bhutan (Nepalese) Refugee Hindu families in Sacramento:

Bhutan is a nation made up of several ethnic groups. One of these is the Lhotshampa (mostly Hindus) people of Nepali origin, who began to settle in the south of the country in the late 19th century. In the 1980s it emerged that Lhotshampas were being seen as a threat to the political order.

When a string of measures were passed that discriminated against their group, the Lhotshampa organized a series of public demonstrations for which the participants were branded as "anti-nationals" .
Several thousands of Southern Bhutanese were imprisoned, and more than 2000 tortured, according to Amnesty International. Very few of them were formally charged. Thousands fled to India and Nepal.
By the end of 1992, there were more than 80,000 living in UNHCR camps in south eastern Nepal.
In 2006 King Jigme Singye Wangchuk abdicated in favor of his son, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk. It is not known what, if any, impact this will have on the situation. The Bhutanese refugees remain in limbo, their future still unclear. Those in the camps continue to wait for a solution that might consist of a return to Bhutan, third country resettlement or local integration or an unknown mixture of all three. Violence in the camps, between those favoring third country resettlement and those who insist on unconditional repatriation, is an increasingly serious problem. An estimated 35,000 exist outside of the camps, in Nepal or in India, without the protection of UNHCR or any status in the countries where they live. Increasing numbers have made the difficult journey to third countries to claim asylum.
Those Southern Bhutanese who remain in Bhutan also face an uncertain future, with continuing discrimination and the possibility of being excluded from the emerging democratic process offered in the new constitution.
The U.S. has offered to resettle 60,000 of the estimated 107,000 Bhutanese refugees of Nepalese origin now living in seven U.N. camps in southeastern Nepal -- their home for the past 17 years. Six other nations -- Australia, Canada, Norway, Netherlands, New Zealand and Denmark -- have offered to resettle 10,000 each.

"Once they arrive, they will be sent to different cities around the U.S.," said David Derthick, a spokesman for the International Organization for Migration, which is screening and transporting the refugees.

They are being sent to New York; Chicago, Illinois; Syracuse, New York; St. Louis, Missouri; and other cities, the International Organization for Migration said.

Many of these refugee families planning to arrive in Sacramento. Local organizations of Sacramento such as Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, Sewa International, Gayathri Parivar, Kannada Sangha of Sacramento immediately contacted these families and offered help as much as they can with the help of other Indian families.

Currently there are about 13 families arrived and expecting more to come. Volunteers invited them to two local Hindu temples and distributed necessary items after identifying their immediate needs such as winter clothes, kitchen utensils, bedding, bicycles, toys, Indian clothes for women etc.

Co-coordinating team is established for future plan. Volunteers also installed few computers with internet connection to help them find the job.

Since we are expecting more than 1000 people in Sacramento we request KSS members to donate the following gently used items. We also request you to help these families to get a job in this troubled economy.

  • Winter clothes, Indian dresses for women
  • Bedding materials
  • Bicycles
  • Computers
  • Kitchen utensils
  • Or monetary donation to buy any of these items
  • Volunteers to help them in any way possible…
