KSS invites members to join the 2009 committee:
Kannada Sangha of Sacramento (KSS) is completing five years of its
formation with many successes. Congratulations to all of us on completing
5 years.
KSS was formed by few like minded people five years ago, with a
simple goal "Preserve and promote Kannada Language and Culture.
"
Well, you tell us. Is KSS on the right path?
While you are working on your feedback, please allow us to ruminate
little bit how did we do. We are not even going to pretend that
we are anywhere near to our goal. But still, there are several uniquely
amazing and creative things KSS has done within the short span of
four years with limited resources. Now think about the all those
functions that KSS has done all these years. Now coming to the "Preserving
the Kannada culture" part of KSS founding vision, the proof
is that what you are seeing.
You have been coming to our functions in increasing numbers. It
may be due to the hospitality and hard work of the KSS volunteers
in each and every event, managing to start the functions on time
despite the involvement of so many new artists each time, serving
you the delicious food with a hospitable smile, introducing new
and creative methods like relevant background slides, lighting,
music, side captions in English, the props, we can go on and on...
Quality of the programs is going only upward direction. Each time
the bar is raised. One program is better than other.
Above all these, it is just the simplicity and open hearted friendliness
of KSS volunteers, what makes this work. Just the normal folks coming
together with a pure, simple desire to show off the talent they
have.
KSS objectives are simple. It's means are simple. It's working methods
are simple. We are proud of what we did so far. We are sure you
are proud that KSS evolved on the Sacramento soil, your home away
from home or your adopted new home.
Please come support KSS by joining 2009 committee and be part of
this organization. The registration ends on Jan 10th,

Helping Bhutan (Nepalese) Refugee Hindu families in Sacramento:
Bhutan is a nation made up of several ethnic groups. One of these
is the Lhotshampa (mostly Hindus) people of Nepali origin, who began
to settle in the south of the country in the late 19th century.
In the 1980s it emerged that Lhotshampas were being seen as a threat
to the political order.
Several thousands of Southern Bhutanese were imprisoned, and more
than 2000 tortured, according to Amnesty International. Very few
of them were formally charged. Thousands fled to India and Nepal.
By the end of 1992, there were more than 80,000 living in UNHCR
camps in south eastern Nepal.
In 2006 King Jigme Singye Wangchuk abdicated in favor of his son,
Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk. It is not known what, if any, impact
this will have on the situation. The Bhutanese refugees remain in
limbo, their future still unclear. Those in the camps continue to
wait for a solution that might consist of a return to Bhutan, third
country resettlement or local integration or an unknown mixture
of all three. Violence in the camps, between those favoring third
country resettlement and those who insist on unconditional repatriation,
is an increasingly serious problem. An estimated 35,000 exist outside
of the camps, in Nepal or in India, without the protection of UNHCR
or any status in the countries where they live. Increasing numbers
have made the difficult journey to third countries to claim asylum.
The U.S. has offered to resettle 60,000 of the estimated 107,000
Bhutanese refugees of Nepalese origin now living in seven U.N. camps
in southeastern Nepal -- their home for the past 17 years.
Many of these refugee families planning to arrive in Sacramento.
Local organizations of Sacramento such as Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh,
Sewa International, Gayathri Parivar, Kannada Sangha of Sacramento
immediately contacted these families and offered help as much as
they can with the help of other Indian families.
Currently there are about 15 families arrived and expecting more
to come. Volunteers invited them to two local Hindu temples and
distributed necessary items after identifying their immediate needs
such as winter clothes, kitchen utensils, bedding, bicycles, toys,
Indian clothes for women etc.
Co-coordinating team is established for future plan. Volunteers
also installed few computers with internet connection to help them
find the job.
Since we are expecting more than 1000 people in Sacramento we request
KSS members to donate the following gently used items. We also request
you to help these families to get a job in this troubled economy.
1. Winter clothes, Indian dresses for women, Bedding materials
2. Bicycles, Computers, Kitchen utensils
3. Or monetary donation to buy any of these items
4. Volunteers to help them in any way possible
